The Digital Farm: A game changer

Sharing of compliance data in fresh chains made easy at 3rd EU Fresh Info Forum

Handling compliance data in the international chains of fresh produce can be a cumbersome challenge, with a lot of paper work or at best repeated data entry. By designing and testing a platform for sharing compliance data the FarmDigital project has shown that these problems can be solved. During the project we have answered questions such as ‘Can this process be made more efficient?’ and ‘Does the platform create mutual benefits for data providers and data users?’

Business and science have joined forces in FarmDigital, an action research programme which is currently working towards a situation in which data only need to be entered once and can be shared easily. It aims to achieve this goal by developing open information architecture, standardising data, developing and implementing an independent, digital platform to enable digital compliance.

Krijn Poppe (Wageningen University & Research): “FarmDigital has taught us a lot on data ownership, business models, and governance. And the fact that for a successful application such issues are as important as good coding. Mistakes in coding are inevitable, it is often said. They can be repaired quickly with an update. This seems not to be the case for business models and governance. On the contrary: one often gets only one chance to put a product in the market”.

FarmDigital is an action research programme which is currently working towards a situation in which compliance data only needs to be entered once and can be shared easily. It aims to achieve this goal by standardising data and developing and implementing an independent, digital platform for people to use.
